Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year!

The start of school is always an exciting time for students, parents, faculty, and staff. A new school year represents a fresh start for everyone with new opportunities for all. I join in that excitement this year as your new superintendent.

I am proud and honored to rejoin the Bethlehem Area School District and to reconnect with the many fine people and organizations that make up our community. Through my years living and working in the Lehigh Valley, including several years at Liberty High School, I came to appreciate and respect Bethlehem Area School District’s rich history and strong sense of tradition. We will work hard this year to add to that rich history of educating our community’s children. While preserving the many successful programs underway in the district, we will also stimulate progress in areas that need to improve.

People are the heart of any school district, and success depends on how effectively those people can work toward a common mission. Our faculty and staff are committed to students – and I am committed to supporting their efforts. Our district will reach out to families and community organizations seeking innovative partnerships to provide all students with the opportunities they need to find success both academically and socially. I will devote significant time this year to getting to know you and the community so that I can best serve your needs.

School districts across Pennsylvania continue to face significant financial and educational challenges. Our school board is committed to insuring financial stability while also providing the best quality education for students. These goals will not come easily. When I visited the district in June, I was impressed by the eagerness of our community partners, teachers, and administrators to join together in meeting the challenges of educational success for all combined with increased financial integrity. Together we will move ahead.

I believe in the importance of public education in our democratic society. I believe that all students deserve high expectations and the support necessary to meet those expectations. I believe progress results from school community members working collaboratively toward a common mission of educating our children. Working together as a community, the Bethlehem Area School District will once again become one of the most respected districts in the state.

Best wishes for a wonderful school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Joseph J. Roy
