The Farmhouse

The farmhouse was built during two different times of Moravian history. This side of the house was built by James Burnside in 1748. It had a salt-box shape with a very steep roof on the back side of the house. This is the parlor; the door leads to the kitchen and the cold cellar. Upstairs above the parlor is the bedroom and above the kitchen is the maid's room. (First four slides)

The Hillman addition was built on the north side of the house in 1816. Because it was built over the cold cellar, it is 32 inches higher than the original Burnside house. Also because of this height difference, a new roofline was added. The upstairs was originally a granary, which was changed to two bedrooms. The front bedroom was for the Hillman children, and the back bedroom was the maid's. Downstairs was the master bedroom and the parlor. Note the bright yellow and navy blue paint that has been restored to the original colors.
