CAPERS
- CAPERS (Community Advocates Promoting Education Recreation Support) is an
organization founded for the purpose of advancing opportunities for high school
students without means from the minority population who have aspirations of
entering the educational field. Dr. Lewis introduced the CAPERS Committee and
their objective and announced that Mr. Young would address the Board. Mr. Young
spoke about the teachers initiative and explained the steps to help our own
minority students become teachers and bring them back to teach in our district.
The students would be provided with a conditional scholarship of $2,500 per
year for four years towards tuition. After college graduation, these students
would return to our district and if they met the criteria for employment, the
district would hire them. Upon employment with the district, they would
contribute $25 per pay to CAPERS for the first four years of employment. A
general discussion was held regarding CAPERS and questions the Board had were
answered.
