BOARD HUMAN RESOURCES
COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, October 11, 2004
Members of the Board Human Resources Committee met on Monday, October 11, 2004, in the Superintendent's Conference Room A, at the Education Center. Present were the following school board members: Joseph Craig, Dr. Craig Haytmanek, William Heske, Charlene Koch, Loretta Leeson, Diane Rowe, and Julie Venanzi. Also present were Superintendent Joseph Lewis and Associate Superintendent Michele Kostem.
The meeting of the Board Human Resources Committee was called to order by Dr. Haytmanek at 8:00 p.m.
Open Forum - None
Review of Policy Manual 700s, 800s and 900s - Due to the incompleteness of the policies distributed, Mrs. Kostem informed the members that this topic would be delayed until November.
Elementary Boundary Changes - Update - Mrs. Kostem passed out a school district map to the Board and asked the members to focus on Hanover Township. She discussed the different areas on the map and the possibilities of homes being built in the township. Mrs. Kostem reported that her information came from a meeting with the township manager, Mr. James Sterner. She spoke about the three major developments and the commercial areas that don't need to be built into the district's plans. Mrs. Kostem summarized the discussion by stating that no additional housing developments are planned for Hanover Township beyond those the district has already included in its plans. Mr. Craig would like a letter sent to the township in order to keep lines of communications open between the township and the district in case there are any changes in the future.
Dr. Lewis commented on the meetings that Mrs. Kostem and Dr. Lewis had during the day with parents regarding Hanover. All parties have agreed to continue dialoguing.
A general discussion was held regarding yield numbers.
Additional Support Staffing Need at Nitschmann - Mr. Acerra submitted a request for an additional secretary at Nitschmann Middle School. He currently has three secretaries. Since the growth at Nitschmann, duties have increased. Mrs. Kostem met with Cabinet and they agreed to recommend an additional half-time secretary. Mrs. Kostem asked that the Board consider and approve the additional secretary and have it put on the agenda for this month. Mrs. Venanzi asked for the monetary cost for the half-time secretary. Mr. Craig reviewed the numbers given by Mr. Acerra and suggested that all middle schools be looked at to make sure they all have the correct number of secretaries. Mrs. Kostem asked the Board to keep in mind the different types of schools and the number of students that come and go. The Board agreed on the half-time secretary at Nitschmann Middle School.

Other - Mrs. Kostem mentioned to the Board the third grade numbers at Spring Garden Elementary School. She let them know that the administration is keeping an eye on the numbers, and would like the Board to give Dr. Lewis authorization to add an additional third grade if it becomes necessary before formal Board approval. The Board agreed.
Dr. Haytmanek adjourned the meeting at 8:40 p.m.
