MINUTES

OF THE

BOARD HUMAN RESOURCES

COMMITTEE MEETING

Monday, March 12, 2001

Members of the Board Human Resources Committee met on Monday, March 12, 2001, at 6:37 p.m., in the Superintendent’s Conference Room, at the Education Center. Present were school board members: Edward Gallagher-Chairperson, Charlene Koch, Loretta Leeson, William Heske, Margaret Williams, Julie Venanzi, and Joseph Craig. Also present were: Superintendent Thomas Doluisio; Assistant Superintendent Michele Kostem; Director of Secondary Education Monty Perfetti, Director of Elementary Education William Nelson, Principal of East Hills Middle School - James Kressly, and Principal of Broughal Middle School - Joseph Santoro.

The meeting of the Board Human Resources Committee was called to order by Mr. Gallagher at 6:37 p.m.

Open Forum - No items were discussed.

Realignment of Middle School Boundaries — The first reading of the proposed realignment of middle school boundaries was presented to the Board. Broughal Middle School’s projected number of students exceeds the available space for next year. Mrs. Kostem proposed to the Board that the boundary between East Hills and Broughal Middle School be moved from Williams Street West to State Street. The change in boundaries would mean that the students scheduled to attend Broughal Middle School would attend East Hills Middle School instead. East Hills Middle School presently has room for this change. This would be phased in over a three year period with the current Donegan Elementary School fifth graders attending East Hills in September 2001. The following year another grade would be added. Overall, approximately 115 students live in the area that would be added to East Hills. The change would not affect the high schools since the students in the proposed area are already included in Freedom High School’s attendance area. Mr. Craig proposed that the realignment be moved to Hayes Street, as a more defining line. Mrs. Kostem agreed to check the numbers affected by that change. This item will be discussed with parents within the next month. The proposed boundary changes will be presented at the April Board Meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 7:03 p.m.
