B.             Northeast Middle School Construction Project

Mr. Charles Shoemaker of Spillman Farmer Architects presented a model of the new Northeast Middle School which will be displayed at the July Act 34 Hearing. He also displayed samples of the brick, block, steel, and limestone trim that will be used on the outside of the new facility. He then explained the layout of the athletic fields and noted that they may not be constructed for six or seven years, not until the old building is demolished and only after district-wide phasing of future construction projects, such as Liberty High School Commons Building, Broughal Middle School, Nitschmann Middle School, etc., since they may require the use of the old Northeast Middle School. Mr. Craig inquired if the two ball diamonds would have high backstops. He noted that there was a problem at Lafayette field with neighboring homes because the backstops were not high enough and neighbors’ windows were often broken. He also requested that the committee look at the possibility of including two tennis courts in the athletic complex. Mr. Shoemaker explained the drainage for the athletic fields and noted that there is the capability of installing seating for 200 in the football area.

Mr. Shoemaker and Mr. Fazil also noted that they have been meeting with the City of Bethlehem to discuss the water run-off and drainage systems.

Mrs. Leeson asked if there is a canopy over the front entrance of the facility. Mr. Shoemaker replied that there was. Mrs. Leeson then requested that the committee consider making improvements to the current design of the canopy.
