MEETING MINUTES

MONDAY, JUNE 14, 2004

 

 

 

Members of the Board Curriculum Committee met on Monday, June 14, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. in SuperintendentÕs Conference Room A of the Education Center. Present were Curriculum Committee Members Anthony Villani and Richard Agretto; Board Members Joseph Craig, Dr. Craig Haytmanek, Rosario Amato, William Heske, Charlene Koch, Loretta Leeson, Diane Rowe, Julie Venanzi, and Margaret Williams. Also in attendance were Dr. Joseph Lewis, superintendent of schools, Michele Kostem, associate superintendent, Dr. William Nelson, director of student services, and representatives of the press.

FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN PRESENTATION

Mr. Villani introduced Mr. Joseph Rahs, principal of Fountain Hill Elementary School, Kathy Quigney, assistant principal, and Stephanie Trovato, staff member who presented an overview of the full-day kindergarten program currently in place at Fountain Hill Elementary School. Mr. Villani noted that the district has been awarded a Block Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to expand the full-day kindergarten program in our schools. Full-day kindergarten programs will be in place at Donegan, Freemansburg, Lincoln, and Marvine Elementary Schools beginning in the fall. The next steps will include the selection of staff, provide training and professional development to the newly selected staff, and informing parents of all aspects of the program.

 

SPARK EXPANSION

Mr. Villani explained that the Block Grant will also expand the districtÕs SPARK program. Dr. Nelson explained that he is working closely with Head Start to make sure specific needs are met.

 

NSRE TESTING REPORT

Mr. Villani distributed and reviewed the results of the 2003 New Standards Reference Exam for grades four, eight, and ten.

 

RENEWAL OF ATHLETIC TRAINER SERVICES

Mr. Villani distributed and reviewed an agenda item for the three-year renewal of athletic trainer service which will be placed on the June 28, 2004, Regular School Board Meeting agenda.
