RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE ADMINISTRATION - February 25, 2002

12.      Authorization to Add Positions from Budgetary Reserve and IDEA Funds

INFORMATION:

Budgetary Reserve includes funds for unanticipated changes in school programs and enrollment increases. There has been an increase in the number of students identified in need of learning support services at James Buchanan Elementary School. In order to be in compliance with the student-to-teacher ratio set by the State Board of Education for learning support special education classes, an additional .5 special education teacher is needed.

The district currently has 2.5 computer specialists assigned to the elementary schools. Individuals in these positions support the use of technology in the schools in many ways. To distribute the workload more equitably, an additional .5 position is needed. Since many of the students who benefit from technology are special education students, the district's allocation of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) funds can support this addition.

RECOMMENDATION:

That the administration be authorized to add a .5 special education teacher to James Buchanan Elementary School, at an approximate cost of $6,800, for the remainder of the 2001-2002 school year and that IDEA funds be used to add a .5 computer specialist to the elementary schools at an approximate cost of $6,800.
