RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE ADMINISTRATION – April 23, 2001

 

 

19.     Technology Literacy Challenge Fund Grant

 

 

            INFORMATION:

 

The Pennsylvania Department of Education has called for grant proposals for the federal Technology Literacy Challenge Fund (TLCF). The Commonwealth has allocated $20,000,000 for competitive grants from this program. Proposals may be submitted for “Internet Infusion Grants” that can fund Internet connections, networks, computers, software, and professional development in the use of these resources.” Proposals will be favored that involve collaboration with other educational organizations, delinquent youth homes, and other community organizations.

 

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

That the administration be authorized to submit to the Pennsylvania Department of Education a grant application for $500,000 to implement a TLCF Project in collaboration with the Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School, the Community Youth Foundation, and the Bethlehem Area Public Library. Required nonpublic school participation will include the Diocese of Allentown and Moravian Academy. If awarded, the grant will fund computers, software, network equipment, and staff development to help students in all schools meet academic standards.

Director Craig referred to the last sentence in the recommendation.  He asked if
"academic standards" referred to the school district's academic standards or the
state's.

Dr. Garrigan confirmed that this refers to the district's standards.

Director Craig stated he is happy that the district is doing something in
collaboration with the private schools.

Director Leeson provided the fact that the Diocese of Allentown is the only
diocese in the state of Pennsylvania that is taking the PSSA state standards
test.


ROLL CALL RECOMMENDATIONS 4, 6, and 19

Director Gallagher moved the administration's recommendations 4, 6, and 19.
Director Craig seconded the motion.  The question was called and roll call was as
follows:  Yea, Directors Gallagher, Glancy, Heske, Leeson, Venanzi, Williams,
Koch, Amato, and Craig  - 9.  Motion passed 9 - 0.
