17.     CyberStart Initiative

            INFORMATION:

CyberStart is an initiative to make free web-based learning and hands-on computer experiences available to licensed day care centers serving preschool children ages three to five. This use of technology is designed to enhance the social, cognitive, and sensory motor development of these youngsters.

The Bethlehem Area School District Early Childhood Department has prepared an application for 12 of its child care centers to participate in this initiative in order to receive a computer, software, and training for each site.

RECOMMENDATION:

That the administration be authorized to participate in the CyberStart Initiative, a multi-year technology and education initiative administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development in collaboration with the Department of Public Welfare.
