RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE ADMINISTRATION - April 23, 2001

13.     Realignment of Middle School Boundaries

INFORMATION:

The number of students projected for Broughal Middle School over the next several years exceeds available space. In order to reduce the number of students scheduled to attend Broughal beginning with the 2001-2002 school year, it is recommended that the boundary on the south side of Bethlehem that divides the students between East Hills Middle School and Broughal Middle School be moved.

Currently, all students east of Williams Street attend East Hills and those west of Williams Street attend Broughal. It is proposed to move the boundary west to Hayes Street. This means that all students living on Hayes Street and east of Hayes Street will attend East Hills.

It is proposed that the change be phased in over three years so those students who already started at Broughal would remain there. The boundary realignment will only affect students as they enter sixth grade. The change would not affect the high school assignment since students in this area already reside within the Freedom High School attendance area.

RECOMMENDATION:

That the Board of School Directors authorize the alteration of the following middle school boundary:

·   That the boundary that separates Broughal Middle School and East Hills Middle School be altered from its current dividing line of Williams Street and moved west to Hayes Street. The realignment includes both odd and even sides of Hayes Street.

·   Parents from the realigned area who have a student(s) entering sixth grade at East Hills Middle School and who have other children attending Broughal Middle School in seventh or eighth grade will be given the option to have their seventh or eighth grade students attend East Hills School.
