RECOMMENDATIONS
OF THE ADMINISTRATION – January 29, 2001
18. Educate
America Act Grant
INFORMATION: The
Pennsylvania Department of Education has called for proposals for the Educate
America Act (EAA) Program, which is a competitive educational initiative. EAA
will fund educational reforms and staff development related to academic
standards. Proposals will be favored that involve low-performing schools,
low-income schools, and consortium partners. Nonpublic participation is
required. A maximum of $500,000 may be requested.
RECOMMENDATION: That
the administration be authorized to participate with Bethlehem Area
Vocational-Technical School (BAVTS) in a grant application to the Pennsylvania
Department of Education requesting $500,000 to implement an Educate America Act
project. If awarded, the grant will fund three initiatives: 1) the addition of
teaching assistants at the BAVTS ninth grade academy; 2) assistance to seven
schools to raise English language arts (ELA) standards performance; and 3)
assistance to four schools to raise mathematics standards performance. The
funds will be targeted to Broughal, Donegan, Freedom, Fountain Hill, Liberty,
Marvine, and BAVTS.
