  1. Pennsylvania Adult Literacy Education Grant Program

INFORMATION:

The Bethlehem Area School District, through a subcontract with Northampton
Community College, is eligible to participate in the Pennsylvania Adult Literacy
Education Grant Program, Act 143 as amended May 31, 1990, P.L. 209, No. 44. This
grant program is designed to provide state funds to local agencies to expand the
availability of adult literacy programs, including instruction in basic skills, English for
Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and instruction leading to the General Education
Development (GED) diploma.


During the 1999-2000 school year, this program was held at the Boys and Girls Club
(Marvine), The South Bethlehem Neighborhood Center, and Broughal Middle School.
The available funds for this program are $19,549.


RECOMMENDATION:

That the administration be authorized to subcontract with Northampton Community
College for the 2000-2001 school year adult literacy program to improve adult literacy
through the Pennsylvania Adult Literacy Education Grant Program, Act 143 as amended
May 31, 1990, P.L. 209, no. 44.
