Authorization to Add Positions from Budgetary Reserve


INFORMATION:


Budgetary Reserve includes funds for unanticipated changes in school programs and
enrollment increases. The number of students at Lincoln, Buchanan, and Miller
Heights Elementary Schools and at Freedom High School assigned to special
education learning support classes has exceeded the district's projections due to
transfers and newly identified students. In order to be in compliance with the student-
to-teacher ratio set by the State Board of Education for learning support special
education classes, an additional .5 teacher is needed for each school.


RECOMMENDATION:


That the administration be authorized to hire a .5 special education teacher for each of
the following schools for the remainder of the 1999-2000 school year:Lincoln,
Buchanan, Miller Heights, andFreedom. The approximate total cost of these four
positions is$16,000.
