About Bethlehem Area School District   Mission

The Bethlehem Area School District is the sixth largest school district in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Located in the heart of the Lehigh Valley, it covers approximately 40.4 square miles and is comprised of five municipalities: City of Bethlehem, Boroughs of Fountain Hill and Freemansburg, and Bethlehem and Hanover Townships.

The district has 22 schools (16 elementary, 4 middle, and 2 high schools), 2 academies, 1 prekindergarten center, 1 vocational-technical school, 4 auxiliary buildings, and 1 stadium complex with a capacity of 12,588. The district maintains neighborhood elementary schools, most of which are smaller than 500 students. Student enrollment for 2007-2008 is approximately 15,354. Targeted student-teacher ratios are 24:1 for grades K-3; 26:1 for grades 4-5; and 28:1 for middle and high school classes. Eighty-three percent of high school graduates advance to higher education.

The BASD employs 2,148 people: 1,192 teachers and 956 support staff. Sixty-two percent of teaching staff holds a master's degree or greater.
